Can You Play Sims On Mac

  • Like some other simmers, I recently received the notification that the Sims 4 was no longer supported by my old computer. No big deal. I simply download the Sims 4 Legacy Edition... But much to my dismay, all of my save files and sims were gone (all of which had accumulated over the last 4 years). I lost all of my legacies as well. To make things worse, I can't access the gallery. I am not a builder, so I am completely at a loss. I don't like any of the given houses in worlds and all of the sims I had created and downloaded are gone. I will probably not be playing the sims until I get a new computer and I don't know even think that will happen. I'm so disappointed and confused as to why this was necessary. My graphics and the game itself seemed to work just fine. I have lost so many memories and one of my favorite hobbies.

i asked a similar question on EA Answers HQ and the response i got is that you can move your 64bit TS4 tray folder across to the legacy tray folder and it will all be there.
I don't know if you use a mac? and if you do i don't know what the file and folder system is like and i'm unable to help.
if you run windows? User > libraries > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Tray.
obviously don't transfer over saved households and lots that contain DU stuff, because legacy will never get that.

I transferred my Tray and Saves folder from the original Sims 4 over to my Sims 4 Legacy Edition and it still doesn't have my saved households or buildings. I made the entire town of Newcrest, but my saves are gone and therefore my town in Newcrest is gone.
  • I got the 'notice' too, yet the Limited Edition game I purchased still runs fine on my 64-bit gaming rig. Still puzzling over why I got the notice.
You can download (free) all three volumes of my Night Whispers Star Trek Fanfiction here: http://galacticgal.deviantart.com/gallery/ You'll need to have a pdf reader. New websites: http://www.trekkiefanfiction.com/st-tos.php

  • Mine got notified too.. weird, but I still play fine with the non-legacy version

  • I got the notice too, not sure why though. I'm running 64 bit.

  • I think everyone got that notice on Origin to make sure those running 32 bit would see it.
  • Hey. I'm not sure if this is the right place but I couldn't find a better thread. I just wanted to get this out there. My computer isn't the best to play Sims on. It's used my many different people in my household and is a few years older than it probably should be. Because of this, I couldn't play Sims for awhile in order to get some help updating it. Once this happened, I was thrilled to be able to play again. And I did for about a month or so. And then this happened. I'm not joking when I say that I sat at the computer and cried. I don't understand why this is necessary and it makes me sad that I have to wait to get a new computer in order to play the Sims at it's best. I don't see that happening in the near future though. I'm not a builder either, so you can understand my frustration with being forced to. And even worse, I can't download University. So it makes me even more upset when they (sims creators/people in charge??) hype it up so much, then say 'By the way, half the community can't access this.' I hope you can understand where I'm coming from.

Mac basically dropped support for 32 bit systems and thus in turn the sims did as well. They put it off for quite a long time as this was mentioned around the time months ago when Strangerville came out I believe? Can understand most probably still didn't know this if they're not really on forums or twitter or other sim community websites. There's just no benefit in supporting 32 bit systems much as it does suck. Same with the last pack of this year coming out being University as it was 64 bit only compatible as that does suck seeing that you can't have it. I kinda didn't have faith in low spec computers being able handle pack after pack as like with the sim series performance gets more demanding. You can still play with Legacy, just can't buy anymore packs.
Best to start slowly saving up for a decent computer with good specs to run the game. I had caught a gaming one on sale around Christmas for about $700 which actually came into my budget. I know the feeling of having a ocmputer than can't play games you wanna play. (Me with the Sims 2).
I do hope they manage to make it where players with Legacy can have access to the gallery.

  • Updating my game with the legacy edition has disabled the installation of the university pack! Can anyone help me fix this so I can finally play the game?? It's super annoying and I don't know where to turn for answers.

Discover University is incompatible with Legacy Edition, unfortunately.

  • I know it's a tough one to swallow for all of you 32 bits people, but we gamers also have to understand that our hobby is tied to an expensive platform and that if it isn't updated, we get limitations. EA is moving ahead just like the rest of the gaming industry, it is simply the way it goes - onwards. I know it's a bother and hassle for Simmers who play only Sims, but even if you personally only play Sims, our game is a part of a bigger whole and is moving with it. I don't mean to seem insensitive, but we do need to realize that this hobby is costly in terms of platforms (heck, mine was close to $3000). We can't play this fancy game on cheap equipment, and development isn't going to halt because some of us have pockets that aren't very big. Time to see Sims 4 for what it is and seperate it from wishful thinking. I'm sorry if I offend anyone with this.

Have you checked if your laptop has the specifications necessary to run the legacy edition?

  • I play on an iMac from 2008, and I was notified that I would have to install the Legacy edition to continue playing. I ignored it for a while, until I was no longer even able to open TS4 without it crashing. After I downloaded legacy, my save files were gone. I moved them from the original sims 4 folder to the sims 4 legacy folder, fine. Save files are back. I thought it would be fine, until I discovered that I cannot access the gallery, cannot download new DLC packs, and the game updates that have been released since then are also not transferring over. I understand that the game is moving forward with technology to be better, but can't there be some sort of work around for the large number of community members who do not have the financial means to keep up? I don't want to halt progress, but it seems unfair to leave so many of us in the dust. I have invested a large amount of time and money into TS4 and am very disappointed by this whole situation.
  • The Sims 4 isn't a cheap game. You can spend a few hundred dollars and still not have all the DLC. If you love the game enough and spend a ton of hours playing it, then it's likely worth it to you. Keeping you PC up to date is part of the cost of playing PC games you like, especially one like The Sims 4 that continues to get bigger and more complex with all the content that gets added to it.
32-bit systems can only use about 4GB of ram, which today is nothing. Even 8GB is basically the bare minimum a PC should have today. 16GB or more is recommended. It might feel unfair that 32-bit users won't get any further updates or content, but it's even more unfair to hold the game back from continuing to improve.
For those that don't feel like they have the financial means for an upgrade, consider this: A new PC that can run The Sims 4 far better than your old machine can will cost you less than if you bought all of the DLC the game has out at this point.

@DezzyFox seems fair. For PC users. What they did to the Mac users is far more worse. I have a 2011 64-bit iMac with 16GB. I play on high settings, use a lot of mods and the game barely lags. But EA decided that besides 64-bit Mac users also need to have 'metal', which my Mac doesn't support. Thanks to that decision my 2012 Mac Mini is allowed to load the Sims, although the game lags terribly and is practically unplayable, but my strong 2011 iMac only has Sims 4 Legacy. Quite funny, huh?
  • I think it's a problem that the game merely costs a fraction of its required platform's price - it's misleading as heck =(
If you're a kid from a family who is not particularly well off, then Sims 4 is practically a no-go for you, even if you can afford the game itself.

That's true for most games though, isn't it? My PS4 games, 3ds games, and computer games all cost much less than what I play them on. I'm not sure how that would be misleading.
  • @Krueger What I meant by that was that a kid might see a game at the store they want and unwittingly purchase it, not realizing they won't be able to play it unless their parents toss all their savings into a platform on which to play said game.

  • @Nindigo Fair enough. I forget sometimes that kids nowadays don't really have family desktops anymore, where even the older models were still powerful enough to play games like the Sims without issue. Now most kids have laptops, and those are trickier to find one that has good enough specs.
  • I don't mind not having Gallery available in-game, but is it really necessary to not have custom content available through the Tray? Content copied throug the Tray before Legacy patch still works fine. I'm running a Mac.

Custom Content (CC) has never transferred with the gallery (thank God) or through the tray. With Sims 4, you have always had to download and install your own CC into your mods folder. Thank God EA/Maxis learned their lesson after the hockey-storm that was the Sims 3 exchange.

From what I learned, Mac computers are not really known as a gaming computer. At least that was after extensive research. So it is fair. Mac computers are better for other uses, usually for business people or people who actually like apple products.
  • @NorthDakotaGamer I get what you're saying about a Mac not being a gaming computer. But having this computer in my house wasn't my decision. And since this game is played by many children who also don't get to make decisions like that, I think it is unfair that people like me and younger players are forced to play a lesser than version. I think they should've make it more accessible.
  • I just want to add that an update like this, which very well could be a signal that the devs are moving on from 4 and moving onto 5, makes me sad. I'm sure if and when 5 comes out I'll start playing it, but it feels like everything is moving very fast. Does anyone agree or am I getting too invested in this game? I just feel like it was a big part of my childhood and I can't believe it's been as many years as it has since I first purchased it...
